Artsmark Gold Award – September 2018
The Arts Council UK presented Dormer House School with the Artsmark Gold Award in 2017 in recognition of our enriching Arts curriculum. This is a national award that endorses the high calibre of Arts provision in an educational setting.
The community outreach programme on offer was instrumental in Dormer’s success. Local schools were invited to take part in an A-Z of musicals and to see our annual Shakespeare production at Chipping Norton Theatre. We also hosted our yearly ‘Shakespeare Day’ alongside children from neighbouring primary schools, and sang harvest and Christmas songs at local care homes.
In-house, Dormer curated an exhibition of the children’s art work at Chipping Norton Theatre gallery and composed a resilience song to celebrate the school motto.
The specialist drama, dance, music and art teachers were thrilled that their work was recognised on a national level.
“Life expects much of all our pupils, and achievement in the Arts gives children confidence and the self-esteem to tackle academic subjects head on,” said Head of Drama, Emily Scates.
The School’s recent production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ at Chipping Norton Theatre demonstrated the pupils’ enthusiasm for drama. Children from Reception through to Year 6 took part in this adaptation and despite the difficult dialogue they had to learn, they threw themselves into their character parts with enthusiasm and skill.
The RSC also selected ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ for their outdoor theatre festival at The Dell in Stratford-Upon-Avon in July 2018.
Dormer will be aiming even higher this year by applying for the Artsmark Platinum, currently only awarded to 12 schools in the country.
